Jamie Prince became the President of OHAO and gave the following speech at the Annual General Meeting held on March 20, 2014.

Good Afternoon, and thank you for attending this years’ Annual General Meeting of OHAO. I am honoured to serve as the Associations’ Presidentfor the next year.
I need to begin by thanking Nancy Wilk for her leadership this past year, and Paul Bozek for his service on the Board of your association for the past three years. In addition, I would like to thank Tim Kelsall for his service on the Board, and extend a welcome to the new members on 2014-2015 Board, President elect, Altaira Hildebrand, Secretary Treasurer Joanna Tam and Board Member Christopher Rahm. I look forward to working with you all over the next year. One other thank you to Jason Boyer of our management company Fletcher Wright Associates, who keeps those of us on the Board organized and your association running smoothly.

As I sat down to write this speech, which I promised to keep brief, I remembered when I first became aware of our association, as a young Industrial Hygiene Technology student from Lambton College, on my second co-op term, over thirty years ago. It was an important time, as the Association had began its transition from a local section of AIHA to became OHAO, with it’s new name and logo and our fancy blue stationary.

We certainly have come along way since those early days. I’ve been fortunate in my career to have worked for two former presidents of our association, Karl Doerwald and Otto Peter, who many of you know from their years working in Industrial Hygiene at General Motors. I’m honoured to follow in their footsteps as president of OHAO.

I think it’s important to review what we are charged with as a Board. The mission statement of OHAO is to advance the profession of occupational hygiene and to serve the interests of our members by:

1. Sponsoring professional development and training;
2. Promoting public and legal recognition;
3. Developing partnerships with stakeholders;
4. Providing public education; and
5. Fostering communication and networking.

The Board has, over the last three or four years, worked very hard to carry out our mission statement. In some elements we’ve been more successful than others. Our program and public education committees have delivered both symposiums and PDCs on a very wide range of topics of interest to our membership. We continue to look for speakers on emerging topics, and the feedback we receive from our surveys after these events very much helps us in planning future events. Our second regional meeting will be held next week in Northern Ontario, again as part of our training mandate. We hope that our symposium, PDCs and regional meetings are helping to educate our membership.

We continue to foster and develop partnerships with regulators, like the MOL and the Prevention office, and with the Provincial Safety Associations, which is an important part of the Boards’ strategic plan. We, as a Board, will continue to work on the strategic plan that was developed a couple of years ago. I’d like to appeal to all those in attendance
here today, that OHAO is our association. We work as well as we do with a number of dedicated volunteers who actively participate on our various committees, and some who decide to put their names forward to serve on the Board. Those who put their names forward today, thank you for doing so.

Those here today who have served in the past on the Board or on committees and those who continue to serve, thank you very much for volunteering your time. Those who haven’t considered volunteering, I’d ask you to please think about it. Finally, I’d like to leave you with the following. All of us in the room have a passion for worker health, it’s why we get up in the morning and do the work we do. We have to as a profession; Drive values that return people Home Safely, Every Job, Every Level and Every Day.

Thank you very much.

Jamie Prince

President
